James Dean Memorial

This is the intersection where James Dean was killed in his Porsche Spyder.

There are conflicting reports, but some suggest that from the position of Dean’s car, that he likely was not speeding, and was hit head-on by another driver attempting to make the sweeping turn onto Hwy 41 and didn’t see him coming. Dean had been stopped by the police just before his accident, for speeding, going 65 mph in a 55mph zone.

The other driver in the accident, who was not charged, was Donald Turnupseed, a 23rd old student at California Poytech University. He was driving a 1950 Ford Tudor. He later graduated and started a successful contracting business called Turnupseed Electric Service, and died of lung cancer in 1995 at the age of 63.

The James Dean Memorial. Just doesn’t seem fitting.
